What happens to donations to Planet Aid?
Planet Aid, like other major charities that collect used clothing, sells the clothing it receives. The vast majority of the material that we receive is sold to buyers in developing countries who, in turn, resell the items as clothing, even clothing that may seem worn out by western standards.
Who does Planet Aid donate to?
Planet Aid uses the money earned from the sale of used clothing to help fund sustainable development projects that help the poorest of the poor. There is simply not enough demand in the U.S. for all our castoffs.
What are the yellow bins for?
Yellow recycling bins are used to collect textiles such as clothes, bed linens, and towels.
Can you put books in charity bins?
Many charities accept good quality used clothing, secondhand furniture and other donated goods. Clothing, books, furniture, toys, homewares and other goods can go on to help the community.
Can you donate bras?
You can donate your new or gently worn bras by sending them in or dropping them off at a location near you. Bras for a Cause is another organization happy to accept donated bras—as well as your “gently loved” swimsuits and lingerie.
What will Goodwill not take?
Goodwill DOES NOT accept these items Baby gear, including furniture, car seats, strollers, high chairs, etc. Building materials: glass, doors, window frames, scrap lumber, metal, etc. Hazardous materials, including liquid cleaners, paints, detergents, fertilizers, weed killers, chemicals, motor oil, etc.

What does Planet Aid do with its donations?
USA Today reported in December 2012 how the “most recent federal tax return from non-profit Planet Aid, which operates donation bins across the country, shows that just 28 percent of its $36.5 million in spending went to its international aid programs in 2011. The bulk of its spending went to collect and process clothes for recycling.”

Area cities are finding that Planet Aid boxes are more of a nuisance than help. With the Federal government now investigating the “charity”, city councils are moving to restrict or even ban the donation bins as they clutter parking lots and alleys across the region.
