What kind of bedding do you use for a TEGU?
For substrate, I recommend cypress mulch, coconut coir, or a sand and soil mixture. Tegus require about 75 to 90-percent humidity, and these substrates are the best at retaining moisture in order to provide humidity.
How often should I mist my TEGU?
Mist the enclosure daily. (I prefer using a pressure sprayer like this one from Exo Terra so my hand doesn’t get tired.) Provide a cool humid hide box lined with damp sphagnum moss. Humidity levels in this hide should stay between 90-100%, with the moss replaced regularly to prevent mold.
Can you potty train a TEGU?
Here are some things that pet owners have trained their tegus to do in this way: Go to the bathroom in a particular spot (potty training) Walk towards a particular spot and stay there (target training) Wear a harness and walk next to you.
How often should I soak my tegu?
To entice drinking and assist with shedding, your tegu can be soaked in shallow tepid water for 15-20 minutes daily. Tegus are omnivores in the wild but many are picky with the vegetation they eat in captivity. Try different types of fruits and veggies that are safe for your tegu to see what it prefers.
Do tegus need substrate?
Juvenile and adults will require 8 inches or deeper for adult tegus. Adults tend to dig, burrow and hide at times so they require deep substrate for sure. Be sure to stay away from substrates such as cedar, pine etc, that are dusty and create too much dirty air. Both of these are toxic to tegus!

What size tank does a TEGU need?
We recommend starting out a baby tegu in at least a 36″ x 18″ tank. Exo Terra’s Large or Zilla’s 40 breeder critter cage both work well. In just 3 years, they can reach an adult size of a hefty 4 feet for males and somewhat smaller for females.
Do Tegus need nightlight?
Add a ~6500K LED or T5 HO fluorescent grow lamp to provide extra illumination, as well as help any live plants in the enclosure to thrive. Lights should be on for 11 hours/day during winter and 13 hours/day during summer to simulate seasonal changes in day length. All lamps should be turned off at night.
Do tegus like swim?
Tegus are active by day. These fast-moving, terrestrial lizards are rarely found more than a few feet off the ground. But they are strong swimmers and can stay submerged for extended periods.
