Are diffs interchangeable?
Yes, they interchange. The side gears may need to be retained depending on if the axle shafts are fine or coarse spline. The older ones have a coarse spline pinion shaft that is supposed to be weaker.
Can you weld a differential?
When a differential is welded, the axels are almost strung together and both wheels will rotate the same revolutions as each other. The wheels are now spinning at the same speed through a corner. This causes a car with a welded differential to behave very different than most cars on the road.
Are front and rear differentials the same?
The differential is an essential part of your car. In front wheel drive vehicles the differential is in the front and called a transaxle. In rear-wheel drive vehicles, the differential is in the back. Four wheel drive vehicles have differentials in both the front and back.
Can an open diff spin both tires?
It is theoretically possible to have both tires spinning with an open diff, although practically impossible to achieve. And it is not an increase of torque that will do it. For this to happen, both tires must unhook at exactly the same time (can’t put enough emphasis on exactly).
What is a 10-Bolt diff?
The 10-bolt differential cover is located on the rear of the axle and is an 11-inch x 10.25-inch oval. Another 8.2-inch axle was built for B-O-P applications and is commonly found in earlier GM mid-size cars. The 10-bolt, 8.2-inch differentials use . 375-inch right-hand thread bolts in the ring gear.
How wide is a HQ diff?
DIFF WIDTHS
| MODEL | mm |
|---|---|
| HQ, HJ, HX | 1555 |
| HZ | 1563 |
| WB | 1592 |
| COMMODORE |
Do FWD have differentials?
With front-wheel-drive (FWD), the differential is alongside the transmission inside a housing, and the unit is called a transaxle. With rear-wheel-drive (RWD), the differential is between the rear wheels, connected to the transmission by a driveshaft.
What are the differences between the HQ-WB and Commodore conversions?
With Commodore conversions, be aware of the different stud patterns. While very close, the Commodore’s metric 5x120mm PCD is slightly smaller than the HQ-WB’s imperial 5×4¾in (5×120.6mm) which is the same as Chev.
What happened to the VL to VP Commodores?
An obvious departure is VL to VP Commodores — they were narrower than HT to WB Holdens. Being narrower allows you to use a rim with more dish while still clearing the guards. Mind you, the VR/VS diff is only 20mm wider so it will push the wheels out 10mm per side. With Commodore conversions, be aware of the different stud patterns.
What is the ratio of a Commodore M78?
Common ratios were 3:08 & 3.45 in Aus models, the NZ 2L export saw 3.91’s. At the end of the VL series, the 25 spline, 2pinion M78 ceased as an option in the Commodore range. 28 spline M78’s become standard fitment til the end of the VS.
What is the difference between a falcon and a Commodore?
XD/XF Falcon utes have 25 spline centres with 3.23 ratio where the sedan models have a 2.77 ratio (this would explain why they seem to be slower on the road when they tended to have a lot more power then the equivalent Commodore model). Note of interest. The VN GRP A commodores were fitted with diffs from the VLT with 3.45:1.
